PVC-free media

PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) plastic material, commonly known as "vinyl" has become one of the most widely-used types of plastics. PVC is a relatively cheap and versatile material, that's why it's very popular in the inkjet media market. But the price we pay for a low-cost PVC, like a roll of self adhesive vinyl is far steeper than it may seem. In fact, this commonplace plastic is one of the most toxic substances saturating our planet and its inhabitants. PVC contaminates humans and the environment throughout its lifecycle: during its production, use, and disposal. Since safer alternatives are available for virtually all uses of PVC, it is possible to protect human health and the environment by replacing and eventually phasing out this poison plastic. PVC can be replaced with safer materials in virtually all cases. As consumers increasingly demand chlorine-free, PVC-free products, and as the environmental and health costs of PVC are recognized, practical alternatives will become more economically viable.

There are some major concerns with PVC (vinyl) products:

  • At the end of lifetime PVC (vinyl) products need to be disposed of. When they are incinerated, they may release emissions such as, hydrogen chloride, chlorobenzene, chloromethane, and dioxins into the atmosphere. Dioxins are a known human carcinogen and suspected endocrine disruptor.
  • DEHP,a phthalate plasticizer used to soften PVC that can leach from PVC products, is linked to reproductive birth defects and other harmful effects.
  • Landfill may not be a good option for PVC (vinyl) products either as they can contain additives, such as biocides, lubricants and toxic heavy metal stabilizers which can potentially leach into the ground water.

Intelicoat has a wide range of PVC free media.

PVC free self-adhesive media

For a self adhesive product we recommend InteliCoat Magic Stick 2. This is a polypropylene film with a repositionable adhesive for indoor and outdoor use.
